چکیده

The merging of unstable liquid jets, approaching with high momentum, results in atomization and liquid mixing within a rapidly deforming impingement zone. The complex geometry and high index-of-refraction gradients that occur near the point of impingement present a particularly difficult environment for optical interrogation. X-ray based diagnostics are performed to determine the liquid mass distribution and liquid mixing in the spray utilizing x-ray attenuation and x-ray fluorescence, respectively. Radiography and computed tomography are employed to determine the mass distribution through single-shot, high-speed, and three-dimensional attenuation measurements using broadband x-ray tube sources. The variable attenuation coefficients are compared to a model to account for beam hardening in the x-ray energy spectrum. The accuracy and precision of the techniques are evaluated through a comparison with data from a narrowband synchrotron-based x-ray source. The Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory is used to generate highfidelity time-averaged and time-resolved point-wise data for the evaluation of the broadband tube sources. X-ray fluorescence measurements quantify the mixing in the impinging jet spray using the APS. Fluorescent tracers are tailored to allow for the direct measurement of the mass distribution of each fluid and thus mixing. The advantages, limitations, and optimization of each technique are discussed, and recommendations for improving performance are presented. A parametric study is performed to determine the effects of spray geometry, flow conditions, and fluid properties, including viscoelasticity in non-Newtonian fluids.

Quantitative time-averaged gas and liquid distributions using x-ray fluorescence and radiography in atomizing sprays.

A method for quantitative measurements of gas and liquid distributions is demonstrated using simultaneous x-ray fluorescence and radiography of both phases in an atomizing coaxial spray. Synchrotron radiation at 10.1 keV from the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory is used for x-ray fluorescence of argon gas and two tracer elements seeded into the liquid stream. Simultaneous t...

Quantitative Flash X-ray Imaging of Liquid Mass Distribution in Optically Dense Sprays

The scattering of visible light in optically dense sprays compromises the ability of common spray imaging techniques to capture the quantitative liquid mass distribution. Because of reduced susceptibility to multiple scattering, X-ray radiography can overcome the difficulties associated with optical wavelengths and provide quantitative measurements of liquid mass distribution in a variety of sp...

X-ray Radiography Measurements of Shear Coaxial Rocket Injectors

Shear coaxial injectors are a common injector type for liquid-rocket-propulsion applications and can be found in many oxygen/hydrogen engines. These injectors rely on the shear between an outer lower-density, high-velocity annulus and a higher-density, low-velocity inner jet to atomize and mix the propellants. Because of the dense-jet core, the optical densities of these sprays are high, partic...

Quantitative measurement of binary liquid distributions using multiple-tracer x-ray fluorescence and radiography.

The complex geometry and large index-of-refraction gradients that occur near the point of impingement of binary liquid jets present a challenging environment for optical interrogation. A simultaneous quadruple-tracer x-ray fluorescence and line-of-sight radiography technique is proposed as a means of distinguishing and quantifying individual liquid component distributions prior to, during, and ...

Recent developments in x-ray diagnostics for cryogenic and optically dense coaxial rocket sprays

The mixing and atomization of propellants is often characterized by optically dense flow fields and complex breakup dynamics. In the development of propulsion systems, the complexity of relevant physics and the range of spatio-temporal scales often makes computational simulation impractical for full scale injector elements; consequently, continued research into improved systems for experimental...
